Election is an important characteristic of democracy, everyone of us are ensured a right to choose who is gonna rule us through elections, unfortunately nearly half of the eligible voters failed to express that right in the past but the turnout in the polling in the recently concluded Assembly elections 2011 in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry shows a different picture. 70+ % in all the three states is really unbelievable, people ply across boundaries of the state and district to caste their votes.
The huge turnout symbolises the untergang of the traditional politics and the dawn of new era. Beware politicians you are gonna face a new generation where if you fail to do your duty you will be ripped off power. Bihar is a living example of what people expects from their representatives, the giants of Bihar politics Lalu Prasad Yadav and Ram Vilas Paswan were thrown off the shores of politics they need more energy and perseverance to swim in, which Nitish Kumar won't let happen. Lalu taught the people of Bihar the power of voting, now they used it against their own master when he failed to take care of them. Now Politics will also become a serious occupation if the results didn't favour the ruling alliance, one can not live eating all the public money for five years and go for the next election so easily with the freebies and with the expectation of cashing the votes, politicians have to spend more time with people's welfare if they want another term. A lot of ruling party MLAs in Tamil Nadu were not even allowed to enter into many places of their constituency, Ponmudi, Professional education Minister, too faced the same treatment in his area.
Nearly 10% of more people voted this time in Tamil Nadu which shows that whoever gonna win this election will be winning with a big margin. The election atmosphere in Tamil Nadu this time was too awful Vaiko was betrayed once again, enormous freebies announced no one asked how Government is going to pay for the freebies, plagiarism of election manifesto showed lack of trust on oneself and absence of creativity, stalwarts switched their constituency out of the fear of loss, campaigning were done more by cine stars than the politicians, employment of all means to bribe the voters however, one should give credit for the innovating ways of bribing and cash transfer, all of a sudden Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) the ruling party announced its major opponent in the elections as Election Commission (EC) brushing aside Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (ADMK), the opposition party and its allies, Police were hand in hand in the transfer of funds yet one major thing that brought confidence in the present system and faith in the election process was vigorous measures took by EC to prevent all the malpractices of a normal election. DMK out of frustration did all the mean activities like fielding Vadivel, comedian Tamil cinema, as a major campaigner, if one says Vadivel's speech was indecent what would they call all the political leaders who were sharing the same dais I would call the dais as 'Pig Sty' sorry pigs for degrading you.
The positive aspect of this election are voting by youth, voting right for trans-genders, fair polling, no unfair incidents and the EC's introduction of video tapping the voters to prevent bogus votes. The next election might be more advanced, the EC might devise ideas to vote from where we are in the coming ages by that the polling will definitely cross 90%. The advancement of technology is definitely making the life more simpler.
On May 13 2011 after the results are out there will be hues and cries from the losers that the EC tampered the EVMs thats gonna bring a lot of fresh arguments against the employment of EVMs but neither the rulers nor the opponents is gonna back the inclusion of '49-O' in the EVM which affects their interest. As per the present system if one person doesn't like any of the fielded candidates he can opt for the '49-O clause' which means he expresses his dissatisfaction over the fielded candidates but there is no secrecy as he/she has to give all the details about him/her, so out of fear many express their dissatisfaction by voting some namesake contestants. If the '49-O' is inserted into EVM then the face of real democracy could be seen. There is also a bunch of supporters fighting for the inclusion of the same might be for it we need a Anna Hazare and a perfect timing.
At this juncture I express my strong discontent about Manmohan Singh's (Prime Minister, India) action of not voting in the Assam Assembly elections where he has a vote, if the Nation's PM is not expressing the right to vote how one could ask the people of India to cast their vote. His act is a shame on Indian democracy. As usual he is silent on the issue
Why such a huge turn out in Tamil Nadu if you ask there pops up a lot of answers
Thanks to the Election Commission and its staff for conducting a free and fair election.

Why such a huge turn out in Tamil Nadu if you ask there pops up a lot of answers
- Anna Hazare factor
- Anti-incumbency
- Announcement of paid holiday in the private sectors and the subsequent days are holidays
- Anti Congress factor
- Recurrent exposure of huge scams
- Spread of messages through social networking sites
Thanks to the Election Commission and its staff for conducting a free and fair election.
nice rticle...
ReplyDeletegreat insights.. talking about present day politics certain things that have to be put in place acc., to me are
ReplyDelete* inclusion of 49 O in EVMs
* make it compulsory for all eligible voters to vote
* reduction in number of terms of mps n mlas
* more transparency in selection of candidates
a few to put here,..
participation of youth in politics is always a welcoming one. but now a days its more of caste affiliation and not the party's work which is gathering the crowd. soon that will also change n we can expect a revolution then,,,
Mr.meenakshi this article is excellent .. i dnt want 2 comment abut the content .. ur framing of words is too gud .. whatever i thought before this election r extensively portrayed here .. well done .. i like ur word play .. best wishes for ur future ventures .- kavin
ReplyDeletegood writing. Vaiko's is a standing example of what not to do and what to do after some wrongdoings.
ReplyDeleterevolution awaits... these are thou inspiring words, I don believe in those. if you see back the history, every 30 - 40 years, a major change has happened in the way politics is working. that's the nature of politics. people need a change after sometime and new era begins every 3 - 4 decades. There are reasons for this too. politicians who understands this ve cornered the power. this is seen in many of the Indian states.
our whole society (not only the politicians) is corrupt, for many decades now... the credit goes to the media and technology for taking the scams now to the masses.
Regarding youth entering mainstream politics, i feel this has happened in a big way in TN in 70s, purely due to the inspiring leaders. Hope that repeats soon... want to see a responsible Indian soceity.. only the current generation can do it.
