இந்த வாரம் நியூ ஸிலாந்தில் ஒரு வெள்ளை இனவெறியன் நடத்திய தீவிரவாத தாக்குதலில் 50 பேர் கொல்லப்பட்டனர். இன்றைக்கு Netflixல 22July என்ற படம் எதேர்ச்சியா பார்த்தேன். இப்படம் ஜூலை 22 2011ல் நார்வே நாட்டில் ஒருவன் நடத்திய  படுகொலை பற்றிய படம், அவன் 71 பேர் கொன்று குவித்தான் அதில் பெரும்பாலோர் பள்ளி மாணவர்கள். கொலையாளி தன்  செயலுக்கு சொல்லும் நியாயம் இந்த நாட்டில் வந்தேறிகளின் ஆதிக்கம் அதிகமாகி விட்டது, இஸ்லாமியர்களின் எண்ணிக்கை அதிகரித்து வருகிறது போன்ற தீவிர வலதுசாரி சிந்தனைகள். இந்த வாரம் நடந்த தாக்குதலிலும் இஸ்லாமியர்களின்  மீது இதே விமர்சனம் வைக்கப்பட்து கொலையாளியால், அதே சமயம் அதை நியாயப்படுத்தி ஆஸ்திரேலியாவின் குயின்ஸ்லாந்து மாகாணத்தின் செனட்டர் ஒரு நீண்ட அறிக்கையை வெளியிடுகிறார். உலகம் முழுதும் தீவிர வலதுசாரிகளின் தாக்கம் அதிகரித்த வண்ணம் உள்ளது. நன்கு படித்தவர்கள் தான் இச்சித்தாந்தத்தின் பின்னால் செல்கின்றனர், தீவிர இடதுசாரிகள் போல.

படத்தில் ஒஸ்லோவில் வெடிகுண்டு வெடித்த தகவல் மாணவர்களுக்கு சொல்லப்படுத்தும் போது  ஒரு மாணவன் கேட்கிறான் 'அல் கொய்தாவா' என்று உலகம் முழுதும் இப்படி தான் இஸ்லாமியர்கள் சித்தரிக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளனர். இது ஒரு பொதுப்புத்தி ஆக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது நோர்வே தாக்குதலுக்கு காரணமானவன் வெடி குண்டுக்காக அதிகப்படியாக உரம் மற்றும் சில வேதிய பொருட்கள் வாங்கிய  தகவல் இருந்தும் அவனை காவல்துறை கண்டுகொள்ளவில்லை இதற்கு அந்நாட்டின் காவல் அதிகாரிகள் கூறிய காரணம் இஸ்லாமியர்கள் மீது தான் நமது கவனம் இருந்தது இவன் இப்படி செய்வான் என்று எதிர்பார்க்கவில்லை என்பதே. அபத்தத்தின் உச்சம் அச்செயல்.

 படம் மிகநேர்த்தியாக எடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. வறண்ட கதையை 2 மணிநேரம் சொல்ல தனித்திறமை வேண்டும்பாடல்கள் நடனங்கள் போன்ற நிரப்பிகள் இல்லாமல் அதை செவ்வனே செய்துள்ளார் இயக்குனர். இனவெறியனின் வக்கீலாக  ஒருவர் இருப்பார் படம் பார்ப்பவருக்கே கோவம் வரும் வண்ணம் பொறுப்பாக அந்த வழக்கை வாதிடுவார் அதனால் அவருக்கு பல அச்சுறுத்தலும் அவர் குழந்தையை பள்ளியில் இருந்தும் நீக்குவார்கள்  அவர் அதை சட்டை செய்யாமல் கடமையுணர்ச்சியுடன் வாதிடுவார். ஒரு இடத்தில் அவன் வழக்கறிஞரிடம் உங்களுக்கு எதனை குழந்தைகள் அவர்களுக்கு வலிக்கும் இடத்தில்  அடிக்க வேண்டும் என்றும் சொல்லுவான் மனிதர் அதன் பின்னும் அவனுக்காக வாதிடுவார் இறுதியில் அவனுக்கு தனிச்சிறை வழங்கி தீர்ப்பு கொடுத்தப்பின்னர் அவன் கைகொடுப்பான் அப்பொழுது தான் தன் உணர்வுகளை வெளிப்படுத்துவார். அவசியம் பார்க்க வேண்டிய படம் இன, மத, ஜாதிய பிரிவினைவாதிகளுக்கு ஒவ்வாத படம்.

எல்லோரும் தொன்றுதொட்டே அகதிகளாக ஊர் விட்டு ஊர், நாடு விட்டு நாடு போய்க்கொண்டு தான் இருக்கிறோம் மனிதன் ஒரே இடத்தில பிறந்து ஒரே இடத்தில மறிப்பதில்லை ஆனால் இதை உணராமல் ஏதோ  ஒரு பொதுக்காரணியைக்கொண்டு ஒரு சிலர் தங்களை இணைத்துக்கொண்டு மற்றவர்களை வெறுக்க ஆரம்பித்தால் இறுதிவரை வெறுப்பு மட்டுமே எஞ்சும். 

  TADA, Sanjay Dutt and Katju

     Apex court had awarded 5 years sentence to Sanjay Dutt, film actor, for illegal possession of AK-56. After 20 years of traversing through hierarchy of judiciary the judgement has been halted without any further level of judiciary. But Indian constitution has given Indian President and Governors of State the power to repeal, commute, and pardon any such pronouncement. As far as sentence to death is concerned President can even pardon it based on the advice of Government. Vesting on these powers Justice Markandey Katju has appealed Maharastra Governor to pardon Sanjay Dutt on the grounds that are bizarre. The reasons for pardoning Sanjay Dutt in the eyes of Katju:

a. The event happen in 1993 i.e. 20 years ago. During this period Sanjay suffered a lot, and had a cloud hovering over his head throughout. He had to undergo various tribulations and indignities during this period. He had to go to Court often, he had to take the permission of the Court for foreign shootings, he could not get bank loans, etc. 

b.      Sanjay Dutt has already undergone 18 months in jail.

c.       Sanjay Dutt has got married, and they have two small children.

d.       He has not been held to be a terrorist, and had no hand in the bomb blasts.

e.       His parents Sunil Dutt and Nargis worked for the good of society and the nation. Sunil Dutt and Nargis often went to border areas to give moral   support to our brave jawans and did other social work for society.

f.        Sanjay in this period of 20 years has through his film revived the memory of Mahatma Gandhi and the message of Gandhiji, the father of the nation.

To Katju:

• If you were that much worried about the judicial delay why you haven’t asked the President/Governor to release the prisoners in various jails who were serving beyond the maximum punishment because of inordinate delay in judicial delay. Aren’t you aware of those facts?
• Is Sanjay Dutt the only person in India with two small children to be punished? Why didn’t you raise your words for other such accused?
• Sanjay Dutt had only spread Gandhian principles through two of his films. But there are many films through which he had spread violence/terrorist principles. Also his single handed delivery of justice without following normal procedures of Indian judicial system had been displayed in various films. Your point evoke doubt whether Munnabhai sequel were made with the purpose of seeking pardon in the post judgment scenario.
• Your thought of Sunil Dutt and Nargis Dutt visiting borders infused moral support sounds funny. Have you ever felt about being in a border and guarding your nation? A film actor visit can be a relaxation alone not a moral support.
• Just because Dutt family rendered a life time service to Congress doesn’t mean that they are above law.

Justice Katju had also reffered Nanavati case (1959) as reference for pardoning Sanjay Dutt in his letter to the Governor.

What is Nanavati Case?

     K M Nanavati, a Naval officer murdered his wife’s lover (Prem Ahuja) for having extramarital affair with his wife. This case was the last case to be heard as jury trial in India. The jury acquitted Nanavati. However, the case was appealed, subsequently Bombay High court awarded life imprisonment for Nanavati. The case drew huge attention through media and influenced the public minds that Nanavati’s actions were in the lines of middle class values hence he should be pardoned. At last, Prem Ahuja’s wife wrote a letter to Governor of Maharastra to pardon Nanavati. How could one draw line between Nanavati and Sanjay Dutt? Katju had tried to mislead the public citing Nanvati case as reference. In the Nanavati case too there had been difference of opinion regarding pardon in the public mind which had been influenced by the media. In Dutt’s case his confession “Because I have Muslim blood in my veins. I could not bear what was happening in the city” might be taken into account. In the back of his mind he had the feeling to spread terror in the city which cannot be ruled out.

          

         Under the same TADA convicts of Rajiv Gandhi assassination case are suffering, why you haven’t raised a word about it. The convicts are in jail for 22 years whereas life sentence is for 14 years only. Perarivalan, one of the convict, was 20 years when he was arrested, at that age mental maturity of any person will be very low, and they can be brain washed to any radical thoughts without pain. Perarivalan had been convicted for procuring battery which was used in the bomb. He got gold medal in his diploma course. He is still serving his life in jail.

          

         There are many under trial accused serving jail term beyond the maximum punishment for the offences committed. You have no say for them because they are just common people whose parents are very ordinary isn’t it? 

Actors cutting across the state had expressed their support to Sanjay Dutt and upheld their camaraderie. Katju is leading the bandwagon for Sanjay Dutt’s pardon since his impeccable judicial career can be advantageous in influencing people. However, his actions initiated a wrong precedence in the functioning of our system. All these people are claiming that Sanjay Dutt had suffered a lot, I don’t get what kind of suffering are you talking? He was free to move in the country, he had been allowed to do films, he had made money, he was spending time with his family, what else you need? How many accused enjoyed such privileges? Where were you when they were suffering? Please don’t put forth lame arguments just because he is Sanjay Dutt.

                It seems in India if you are elite justice can be bent as per your wish.

VISHWAROOPAM

           Vishwaroopam created a lot of expectations due to the ban in Tamil Nadu and it made a huge success in box office too . Viz (Kamal) an under cover RAW agent is running a Kathak school in New York City,(NYC) his wife Nirupama (Pooja Kumar) is a Nuclear Oncologist. Viz is in NYC to thwart the plans of Omar (Rahul Bose) to destroy NYC with a Cesium bomb (radioactive bomb). How Viz got exposed, how he averted the bomb is what the movie is, in the mean while Viz and Omar's camaraderie in the Al-Qaeda camp is shown just to explain how Viz came to know about Omar's modus operandi. 

         Vishwaroopam is made with the aim of having a seat in Hollywood but the movie failed to make such an impact. Technically the movie might have reached Hollywood standards but screenplay wise it is still in Kollywood. Kamal aimed to be omnipotent in the movie that is his nature but that made him to fail in many fronts. Omar's dialogue " 5 lakh can be earned anytime but not a Tamil speaking jehadi" when penned down might have attracted huge appreciation from Kamal's sycophants that's why he didn't have a rethink over it, it is the funniest dialogue of the movie, likewise you come across many stupid dialogues. He didn't want a comedy track in the movie but his characterization succeeded in making you laugh, Peter the detective, woman police interrogating, Nirupama etc. Why Nasser was roped in I couldn't get, is it because he is a Muslim or a close friend often not missed in Kamal movies, Nasser's guest appearance could be averted, his less agile body language in the fighting scenes make you sympathize with jehadis. In Afghanistan, Kamal with his parochial knowledge portrayed Talibans as more brutal, fundamental but failed to put the Americans in the same plane just to appease them. Omar says "Americans won't kill women and children", humorous dialogue.

        American president's photos are used by Talibans to firing practise, I think it's a fanatical faction of Taliban borne out of the mind of kamal. 

 

         What Andrea was doing? hey it's a spy movie man you need a woman agent otherwise it would miss Hollywood standards. Why Nirupama is strolling all along after getting released from FBI custody, why she isn't put in a safe place? she is a Nuclear Oncologist only she knew how to prevent the caesium bomb, also you have to emote the audience with the middle class sentiment dialogues. Why PM is on phone even before the bomb is diffused and all praise for Viz, I saw British top boss appreciating James Bond, you should meet those norms yaar. When the BGM "Saare jahan se achha" played I got goosebumps man, I am proud to be Indian, you made me feel like that . 

        As far as acting is concerned except for kamal no one had a challenging role, Rahul Bose's  expressions didn't work out either as a terrorist or as a villain. Kamal got stuck up with the FBI, NYPD because of his inexperience with their functioning,in those scenes he couldn't rope in good actors and also couldn't make good scenes.

         Kamal tried to make an impact in Hollywood with a bang but it ended with a fizz. I thought RAW is to save India but Kamal made it different, the only positive aspect of the story, India is projected as saviour of the world as Americans and British project themselves. But this might create a negative impact on American minds for making them secondary, you have no right to do so.

குட்டிஸ் சுட்டிஸ்

சன் தொலைகாட்சியில் 'குட்டிஸ் சுட்டிஸ் ' என்ற நிகழ்ச்சியில் ஒரு பெண் குழந்தை தன் தாயும் தந்தையும் வீட்டில் சண்டையிடுவார்கள் என்று கூற சிரிப்பும் கை தட்டல்களும் எழுகின்றது மேலும் அந்த குழந்தை தந்தை பெல்டை உபயோகிப்பார் என்கிறது அதற்கும் சிரிப்பு தன் தாய் தந்தையின் கழுத்தை பிடிப்பாள் என்கிறது அரங்கமே அதிர்கிறது தாய் உட்பட, மேலும் ஒரு படி சென்று அக்குழந்தை சண்டை முடிந்த பின் அதன் தந்தை வேறு வீட்டிற்கு சென்று விடுவார் என்கிறது மழழை குரலில் இதன் வலி அந்த குழந்தைக்கு தெரியாது அவள் தாய் அறிவாள் நிகழ்ச்சி தொகுப்பாளர் இவ்வளவு விடையையும் குழந்தை மூலம் கொணர்ந்து சிரிக்கிறார், தாய் வலிய சிரிக்கிறாள் .  இவை சிரிப்பதற்குரிய  விஷயமா? மிகவும் வருந்ததக்கது இந்த சமுகத்தின் நிலை... இம்மாதிரியான நிகழ்சிகளின் அவசியம் என்ன? படத்தொகுப்பாளனுக்கோ நிகழ்ச்சி தொகுத்தவனுக்கோ இந்நிகழ்ச்சி சமூகத்தில் உண்டாக்கும் பாதிப்பு விளங்கவில்லையா? இல்லை எனக்கென்ன என்ற மெத்தனமா? இல்லை முதிர்வின்மையா? எனக்கு விளங்கவில்லை? 

இந்நிகழ்ச்சியில் பெரும்பாலும் அண்ணாச்சி கேட்கும் கேள்வி குடும்ப சூழலை மையமாக்கி தான் பெற்றவர்களிடையே சண்டை உண்டா? உட்பட. அண்ணாச்சி அவர்களே வீட்டுச் சண்டை பற்றி நகைப்பதுக்கு என்ன இருக்கிறது? இது அறிந்தும் அறிவிலிகள் குழந்தையை அழைத்துக் கொண்டு வந்துவிடுகிறார்கள்   இந்நிகழ்ச்சி சிறுவர்களுக்காக அல்ல,  'A' சான்றிதழ் வழங்க வேண்டிய ஆபத்தான ஆபாசமான  நிகழ்ச்சி?

இந்நிகழ்ச்சி நம் கல்வி அமைப்பின் அவல நிலையை எடுத்துரைக்கிறது, கல்வி  அறிவு முதிர்ச்சிக்கு வித்திடவில்லை என்பதை அப்பட்டமாக முகத்தில் அறைகிறது இருந்தும் இதை சீரமைக்க வேண்டி எங்கும் எந்த குரலும் ஒலிக்கவில்லை.

வன்முறை சினிமாவில் வருவதை விட தினமும் வீடுகளில் அரங்கேறுகிறது இதன் பாதிப்பு வளரும் சிறுவர்களின் மனதில் ஏற்படுத்தும் பாதிப்பை பற்றி பெற்றவர்களுக்கு அக்கறை இல்லை. நாளை அந்த சிறுமி வளர்ந்து எவ்வித வன்முறையை கையாலுவாள் என்று எண்ணி பார்க்க பயமாக இருக்கிறது. 

சமுகத்தில் வன்முறையை தடுப்பது அரசின் கடமை என்கிற வர்க்கத்தினர் குடும்ப சூழலில்  உருவாகும் வன்முறையாளர்களை கட்டு படுத்தும் பொறுப்பும் அரசுக்கா என்பதை விவாதிப்பது நலம். குழந்தை படிப்பில் சிறந்து விளங்கினால் மட்டும் போதுமா? ஒழுக்கம் கட்டுப்பாடு பிறரை மதிக்கும் பழக்கம் இல்லாத மனிதன் சமுகத்தின் வீழ்ச்சிக்கு விதையாகிறான். நாகரிக வளர்ச்சி நகரமயமாக்கல் மனிதனை மீண்டும் மிருகமாக்கிறது என்பதில் எள்ளளவும் சந்தேகமில்லை 

பெற்றோர்களே உங்கள் முதிர்வின்மையால் நீங்கள் விதைப்பது முதிர்வற்ற வன்முறையான எதிர்காலம், நீங்கள் விதைப்பது நீங்கள் தான் அருக்கப்போகிரீர்கள். வீட்டில் தாய் தந்தை நடந்து கொள்ளும் முறையை பார்த்து தான் குழந்தைகள் வளர்கிறார்கள் நீங்கள் ஒருவருக்கு ஒருவர் கொடுத்து கொள்ளும் மரியாதையை தான் நாளை உங்கள் குழந்தைகள் உங்களுக்கு அளிப்பார்கள். உங்கள் குழந்தையின் நடத்தை சுற்றத்தையும் பாதிக்கும் என்பதை மறவாதீர்கள் 

ஒரு திரைப்படம் வெளியாவதால் சமுகத்தின் ஒருமைப்பாடு சீர்குலையும் ஒரு சமூகத்தினரின் உணர்வுகள் பாதிப்புகளுக்குள்ளாகும் என்று போர் கோடி தூக்கிய சமுக ஆர்வலர்களே எங்கே சென்றீர்கள் தணிக்கை இன்றி ஒளிபரப்பாகும் இம்மாதிரியான நிகழ்ச்சிகளின் ஒளிப்பரப்பின் போது. நாளுக்கு நாள் வீட்டுக்கு வீடு வன்முறை வளர வித்திடும் இது போன்ற நிகழ்ச்சிகள் தடை செய்ய வேண்டாமா ? தொலைக்காட்சி தொடர் என்ற பெயரில் கட்டவிழ்த்து விடப்பட்ட வன்முறை பற்றி யார் விவாதிக்க? தன குடும்பம் தன மக்கள் என்று வாழ நாம் ஒன்றும் தனி தனி தீவில் வாழவில்லை சமூகம் என்ற கூட்டுக்குடும்பத்தில் வாழ்கிறோம். சிந்தித்து தீர்வு காண வேண்டிய ஒரு பிரச்சனை கேட்பாரற்று கிடக்கிறது?

 என்று விடியுமோ?

தொலைக்காட்சி நிகழ்ச்சிகள் தணிக்கைக்கு உள்ளாவது தங்கள் கருத்துச் சுதந்திரத்தை பாதிக்கும் என்று கூக்குரல் எழுப்பும் தொலைக்காட்சி நிருவனர்களே உங்கள்  சுதந்திரம் எம்சமூகத்தை சீர்குலைக்கிறது இதற்க்கு நாங்கள் என்ன செய்வது?

தொலைக்காட்சிகளும் தணிக்கைக்கு உட்படுத்த வேண்டும் இல்லையேல் சமுகத்தின் அடிப்படை சீர்குலைந்து விடும். 

தவழும் வயதில் நடக்க ஆசை

வீரியம்  குன்றும் வரை கலவி மீது ஆசை

The Overcoat

I came to know about  ‘The Overcoat’ a short story of Nikolai Gogol  in Jhumpa Lahiri’s debut novel ‘The Namesake’ as she didn’t speak about the story anywhere in the book it grew my curiosity to read that story but unfortunately it took nearly 3 months for me to complete it . The story is little big but worth to spare your precious time. I would rate it as the best short story I ever had read.

The story is very simple it revolves around Akakiky Akaievitch, he buys an overcoat which is robbed in the very same day. He tries to restore the stolen overcoat but the bureaucracy and its indifferent attitude send him into self-isolation he recurrently think about the overcoat and the events which followed which costs his life ultimately. The author didn’t want to end the story there itself he extends by sending Akakiy’s ghost to roam in the streets of St.Petersburg in search of its overcoat.

What’s special in this simple story one might ask it is the way the author describe the Akakiy’s character, his colleagues and the bureaucrats. He depicted the mental level of Akakiy vividly if the reader has good observational skills he would have come across one such Akakiy in his life and definitely most of us are like his colleagues. The bureaucrat/ important personage’s characterization shows one that irrespective of time frame and nationality the bureaucracy remains the same, the author should be praised for having such a keen eyes and portraying the nature of bureaucracy with the same effect. The author delicately speaks about the personality dilemma in the introduction of the important personage and also in the aftermath of his encounter with Akakiy, a dilemma which exists in every human mind though not similarly.

Akakiy never cared much when teased by his colleagues it is not because of his inability to retaliate but of his nature he accept it and occasionally he express his protest weakly and sympathetically I hope you would have come across someone like that in your life somewhere. When the tailor says Akakiy has to buy a new overcoat Gogol gives you a natural reaction of Akakiy the way he begs to the tailor to mend the coat its classic. Also, the night when Akakiy lose his overcoat the author asks the readerto put himself in Akakiy's shoes to think how he would have spent his night in bed. Apart from Akakiy the important personage is an important character in the story because Gogol’s intention in this story is not an overcoat alone he wants to show us how people try to change or get changed when their status/rank changes, at the same time how their nature and new face struggle between each other to lead in the front unfortunately the new face wins for many but here author put the important personage in the few. The minor details of various characters in the story should be observed keenly to enjoy the story like the landlady, Akakiy’s colleagues intention to contribute etc., The thing I wonder about the story is how a simple overcoat like this could be neatly and stylishly sewn for all the readers, the author is really a surprise for me I am interested in knowing him more. At the same time I curse myself for wasted all my life stupidly without reading much despite having enough access to books.
